I liked the bar at the end of the Heineken tour. It's very vibey (almost like a night club) and I enjoyed the beer! In particular, I enjoyed the combo because of the locational convenience of the Heineken experience and the canal boat tour. The canal boat tour is over the road from Heineken so it was very easy to get to!

I absolutely loved how my Amsterdam experience combined beauty and culture in the perfect way. The 75-minute canal cruise was magical—gliding through the historic waterways, seeing the city’s iconic architecture from such a unique perspective, and feeling the charm of Amsterdam come alive. Visiting the Rijksmuseum afterwards made the day unforgettable. Standing in front of masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer, I felt both inspired and connected to centuries of history. Together, the cruise and museum created the perfect balance of relaxation and discovery—I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

The night tour of Amsterdam by boat was truly spectacular. The guide on the boat gave a comprehensive explanation of the history and present of Amsterdam I would recommend using a microphone as the guide could not be heard very well at the back of the boat where we were seated. The boat was closed, not open as it said on the website where we booked the tour. I would definitely recommend a night tour.

Heineken tour was fabulous. We liked the guided portions and the "Bottling You" section was fun and different from most brewery tours. The beer tasting was also a highlight. The boat tour guide was also terrific, I wish I could remember her name!

The best part of the experience was probably Amsterdam itself. I do appreciate the easiness of entering the attractions which your tickets gave.

Amsterdam canal cruise tickets: Quick overview

  • Choose from sightseeing tours (60–75 min) or dinner/drink cruises (1 hour 45 min–2 hours 30 min) offered during the day, sunset, or night. All cruises feature multilingual audio and operate in light rain.
  • The most common route is the core city loop, but some operators offer longer routes through the larger canals, Amstel River, or lakes/strait. Check your Amsterdam canal cruise tickets for exact details.
  • Boats vary: most are heated with glass roofs, while luxury options use smaller saloon boats, semi-open boats, or yachts. Seating is usually first-come, except for dining cruises, which often have reserved tables.
  • Book sunset, weekend, and evening cruises far in advance, as these sell out first. Last departures during peak season can be as late as 10pm.
  • Plan to arrive 15–20 mins early for check-in; skipping the ticket line is common with pre-booked tickets, but an ID check is often required.
  • Best upgrade: If you’re unsure, choose the Luxury Heated Saloon Boat option for a smaller group and guaranteed window views.

Things to know before booking your Amsterdam canal cruise

  • When to book: Cruises operate year-round, but April–October is peak season. Evening, sunset, and speciality cruises (like Cheese & Wine) often sell out 5–7 days in advance. Booking your Amsterdam canal cruise tickets early ensures your preferred time slot.
  • Discounted tickets: Some cruises offer discounted prices on weekdays. Additionally, discounted tickets are available for children, and infants travel free.
  • Cruise types and duration options: The most popular choice is the 1-hour sightseeing cruise with audio commentary, ideal for a quick overview. Dining and speciality cruises (like Pizza or Luxury Cheese & Wine) generally last longer, from 60 to 90 mins, and focus on the experience rather than just the commentary.
  • Day vs. evening experiences: Day cruises (10am–5pm) offer the clearest views of canal houses, bicycles, and street life for photography. Evening cruises (5pm onwards) provide a romantic setting, highlighting the illuminated bridges and a quieter ambience, perfect for dining or a luxury experience.
  • Key boarding points: Most cruises depart from centralised, easily accessible piers: Centraal Station, Damrak, Anne Frank House, and the Rijksmuseum. Choose the pier that best fits your daily itinerary, such as Centraal Station if you are arriving by train.
  • Boat types and seating comfort: Boats are generally closed and heated (for comfort, especially in winter) and feature panoramic glass roofs. Open boats are more common in summer, offering unobstructed views and fresh air. Some luxury saloon boats offer reserved, premium seating.
  • Dining and speciality inclusions: Meal options range from casual Pizza Cruises with unlimited drinks to premium Cheese and Wine cruises. Dinner and speciality cruise prices start around €30–€40 per person, offering a great way to combine sightseeing with a meal.
  • Winter seasonality and special events: From early December to late January, the Amsterdam Light Festival transforms the canals. Booking a Light Festival cruise is the best way to see the glowing art installations, but these sell out fast. Winter sailings use heated boats for comfort.
  • Combo tickets for value: Save money by choosing combo tickets that pair a 1-hour cruise with entry to top attractions like the Rijksmuseum or Heineken Experience, offering discounts of up to 28%.
  • Accessibility and policies: Cruises operate in most weather; however, boarding typically involves a few steps. Travellers needing wheelchair access should confirm the boat's specific accessibility features with the operator before purchasing their Amsterdam canal cruise tickets.
  • Tourist tax: Most Amsterdam Canal Cruise tickets exclude the £1.50 tourist tax per person that must be paid on-site.
  • Cancellation policy: Most cruises offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time, unless specified otherwise.

Types of Amsterdam canal cruise boats

  • Open boats are perfect for sunny days. They are ideal for couples looking for a romantic experience, photography enthusiasts keen on capturing the best angles and uninterrupted shots of the city, and nature lovers.
  • Closed boats offer protection from the weather while still providing great views through large windows. These boats are heated, making them a comfortable choice year-round, even more so in the winter. These are ideal for families since they are safe for kids, with no risk of them leaning over the edge, and for elderly travellers.
  • A semi-open boat offers the best of both worlds: it’s partially covered to provide some protection from the elements, but also has open sections so you can enjoy the sights. It is ideal for groups with mixed preferences and those visiting in milder weather.

  • Booze/Drinks boats are designed for a more festive experience, with drinks served onboard. Options can range from wine and cheese tastings to full-on cocktail parties. They are perfect for bachelorette/bachelor parties, as well as large groups.
  • Food-inclusive cruises combine sightseeing with dining, offering meals ranging from casual snacks like pizzas to cheese and wine.

  • Luxury boats have everything you could want, with several amenities, sunny decks, dining areas, and even a host on some boats. These boats can be perfect for big parties or family reunions.
  • Salon boats are a bit smaller and more cozy. They're all about relaxing inside with comfy seats and big windows to enjoy the view. Some boats also have a bar or a bathroom on board.

  • Large boats (regular cruises) are spacious with lots of open areas to soak up the sun. You'll find bathrooms, dining areas, and even bars and entertainment on some. These boats can carry 50 to 80 passengers and mostly stick to the three main canals.
  • Small boats are the most intimate. They're like a cozy little cabin on the water, perfect for couples or small groups. They can go into the narrower canals, giving you a really personal view of Amsterdam. These boats usually only carry a few people, from 2 to 20.
  • Open boats are smaller, with no enclosed cabin. You're basically out in the open, with a canopy and basic seating. They're perfect for feeling the wind in your hair and getting up close to the canals. These boats can carry fewer people, around 20 to 30.

Plan your canal cruise in Amsterdam

Friends enjoying wine on an evening canal cruise in Amsterdam.
  • Arrival and check-in time: Arrive at the designated pier 15 to 20 mins before your departure time to allow for check-in and boarding. Late arrivals may not be able to board, and tickets will not be refunded.
  • Required documents: Please have your digital or printed ticket/booking voucher ready to present at the check-in point. A valid ID (driver's license or passport) is required.
  • Dress code: For standard sightseeing cruises, the dress code is casual and weather-appropriate. For luxury or dinner/evening cruises, smart casual is recommended.
  • Finding your check-in point: Verify the exact pier location stated on your Amsterdam canal cruise tickets, as departure points often vary.
  • Boarding and seating: Boarding usually begins 10 to 15 mins before departure. Seating on sightseeing cruises is typically first-come, first-served, but luxury saloon cruises may offer reserved or grouped seating.
  • Luggage and restrictions: Only small handbags, backpacks, and personal items that can fit comfortably on your lap or beneath your seat are allowed onboard. Large suitcases or excessive luggage must be left behind.
  • Child and pet policy: Children are welcome on most sightseeing and dinner cruises; check specific ticket details for age restrictions or required child tickets. Generally, pets are not permitted onboard, with the exception of service animals.

  • Daytime sightseeing: 9:30am–6pm (Departures every 15–30 mins, most frequent in peak season)
  • Evening: 5pm–10pm (Final departures around 9:30pm)
  • Light Festival: 5pm–10:30pm (Seasonal from late Nov–Jan, dedicated routes)

Best time of day: Book a 9:30am or 10am cruise to avoid the midday rush, or choose the Golden Hour (late afternoon) for photography. Evening cruises offer a romantic, quiet experience seeing the illuminated canals.

Best season: The shoulder seasons (April, May, September, October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds than high summer (June–Aug). From November to January, book your Amsterdam canal cruise tickets for the Light Festival.

Blue Boat cruises are generally accessible for wheelchairs and strollers via ramps.

However, smaller, classic, or historic saloon boats may involve steps at the pier and have limited space onboard, lacking dedicated accessible restrooms. Crew members are available to assist elderly travelers or those with reduced mobility; we recommend contacting the operator for specific boat details.

  • No outside food/drinks: You generally cannot bring your own refreshments; check specific Amsterdam canal cruise tickets for included beverages or snacks.
  • Baggage: Large luggage and unfolded strollers/prams are not allowed due to limited space and safety.
  • Pets: Service animals are allowed. Policies on companion pets vary; most operators do not allow non-service dogs.

Tips & guidelines

  • Arrival buffer: Aim to arrive 15–20 mins early at the pier to secure your preferred seats (especially crucial for open-deck boats).
  • Best seats for photos: Sit near the back (stern) of the boat or on the starboard side (right) for the best shots of the historic canal houses and bridges.
  • Photography timing: For optimal lighting, book your Amsterdam canal cruise tickets for a departure time before 11am or during the "Golden Hour" (90 mins before sunset).
  • Layer up: Canals are breezy year-round. Bring a light jacket or scarf for evening cruises, even if the boat is heated.
  • Audioguide quality: Bring your own wired earbuds (standard 3.5mm jack) for better audio quality and comfort.
  • Expert commentary: It is best to choose canal cruise tours that include a professional guide or an audio guide for a more informative and memorable experience. While audio guides offer language versatility and clarity, live commentary adds a personal touch and can be more engaging and humorous. Choose what works best for you!
  • Luxury dress code: Dinner and luxury saloon cruises are generally smart-casual, but formal wear is not required. Sightseeing cruises are strictly casual.
  • Choosing your boat: Open boat tours are ideal for catching impeccable views of the surrounding landmarks. However, make sure to check the weather before booking them; in the winter, a closed, heated boat is a better option without compromising on your views.
  • Light Festival booking: Tickets for the winter Light Festival cruises sell out weeks in advance; secure your spot as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
  • Combo deals: Opt for a cruise combo to save time and money. These cruises also allow the flexibility to go on the cruise any time on the same day, with many cruise agencies offering an open ticket or a time slot allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
